Uneasy Sunday

Hey Bloggers here for your two cents!Pepper!

Now the other day Pepper had a hairball...this hairball contained a single roundworm.
(so now I know probably one of the main reasons his poops have been so soft and here I was blaming the whole thing on him eating some of tyganas food)
So I made a vets appt but I couldn't get in until the 28th!
So....what do I do in the meantime?

Is a vet necessary for something like roundworm? I mean theres lots of OTC dewormers but I have no experience in this. I read theres only one dewormer that can also kill the eggs but it's only available through Vets.

Is this true?

What do you do when you find worms in your babies?

I'm absolutely positive I brought him home With worms, just none of us knew he had them.

The 28th? For a worm check? Most vets will let you bring in a stool sample, test that and give you worm meds for it. If not, I'd look for another vet. I'm very very wary of non vet prescribed meds.

We hope you can get in sooner, but we don't have alot of advise on this, sorry!

PS We're very happy that you and Tygana are starting to tolerate each other a little bit. It takes baby steps!

I don't know what tablets are used in the US, but in the UK we can get Drontal Cat tablets from our vet. They reccomend them and Profender spot on wormer. Both kill most common types of worms. Drontal can be bought online, but Profender can only be bought online with a vet's prescription. It would be worth asking your vet if you can just go in and pick up the tablets. You will need to worm Tygana at the same time as he could possibly have picked up the eggs from Pepper.

My mom says take him to the vet. Why can't they take you till the 28th? Maybe there is another vet that can help? Mom says worms are bad and can get worse if not treated.
We hope Pepper will be ok!

If the vet has seen the cat before they just need a stool sample. However, if he hasn't been seen- legally they need to see the cat before they can dispense meds. One of the best worm medication is Drontal. It is fantastic. ALSO you should get your other baby dewormed as well- they probably shared them in the litter box.

I don't know too much about it, but have had the meds given to Mommy Cat and Daddy Cat at the vet in the past...I think you might bring Tygana in too in case he needs the meds as well..That's a long time to wait for an appt....Best of luck friends...J, Calle, Halle, Sukki

I think you should be able to bring a poop sample to your vet anytime and it can be sent away for analysis. Then you could just go in and pick up the meds anytime if the results are positive (but still keep the appointment for the 28th). Best to have a sample from both cats checked out because I think they can spread worms to each other.

Hi! Ok, can we just say ewwww and yuk! MOL!

We're not much help but our mom really likes this site when she needs to get info: marvistavet.com (we're not sure if we can put a link here).

Go to the library section and there is an article for roundworms in cats. Hope you can get to the vets sooner and are all feeling better. Purrs,

We think that you got some good advise, and perhaps you can call your Vet and ask if you could drop off a stool sample (from both cats-- worms are easy spread) and then get some meds and then go back for the appt on the 28th.

We are sure Pepper will be OK -- but we understand how you feel. Our kitties have all had worms at one time or another.

Once dewormed it's a done deal, really.

Well, we are behind - I can't believe they are making you wait until the 28th - I haven't ever heard of anything like that before. I am with those that say that you might want to get Tygana checked to be safe. I would double check with the vet and see if they could at least begin medication with just a sample and not a full check but I am very surprised they would ask you to wait that long, so you might want to look into another vet. We have had 50/50 at our house - lucky for us the worms never spread because the kittens had it and the cat's did't share litter with them at the time.

I can't say anything for over the counter - all our worms were dealt with at the vets - but they also got them in right away (the longest wait was less than a week, because I couldn't get up there til Saturday with work, and it wasn't too severe).
